I am sorry, Tom, but I don't think Emma Stone has much to do with Gwen's popularity, I think it's pandering an iteration of a character to cosplayers, complete with a hashtag name, and then milking it for all it's worth. If it was the strength of an actress, why is Mystique or Moira MacTaggert suffering the same success?

It was intended to be that when the project started, but people changed their minds along the way.

Um, I think Tom confused asks.

To throw my two cents to anon’s ask (a sequel to this), I would say neither Mystique nor Moira have been particularly memorable in their movie versions. Gwen got lucky to be played by a actress who was already America’s darling when she took the role. Mystique is a very sexualized character in her movie appearances, making her kinda of a turn off for the current female readers, and not even been currently played by Jennifer Lawrence saves her.

Is there some pandering involved? Sure. But it was Emma Stone who put Gwen on the map for current readers, and who was just in a movie a few months before the initial announcement and debut of Spider-Gwen. If any other actress would had played her and not pulled it, or if there would be some time (let’s say 2 years minimum) between Stone’s last movie and Spider-Gwen’s debut, I don’t think there would be near the hype Gwen is currently experiencing.
